Cookbooks - Finding the Best Cookbooks

When going to a bookstore, you always see a line of cookbooks, each different from one another. You always have a hard time choosing one, since they all look appetizing and written by experts. You choose one, go home, and learn that the cookbook isn't suited to your lifestyle and experience.

This is the problem with many people, particularly moms. They don't know the tips for finding the best cookbooks. Before you buy, there are some questions you have to think about. This could save you a lot of time and effort in cooking a dish not really meant for you. It will also save you money better spent on buying a better-suited cookbook.

First of all, how much cooking experience do you have? If you have absolutely no previous experience with cooking, start with the basic type of cook books. That way, you start with the basics, like cooking scrambled eggs, rice, or even boiling water. On the other hand, if you have a long history of cooking, something more complicated would be better. It will challenge you and at the same time let you cook a great dish.

Next thing to think about is the food preference of the people you're cooking for, including yourself. This is very important, because some people are vegetarians and wouldn't eat food made with any meat. If that's the case, then a cookbook especially written for vegetarians would be the best choice. For the people who prefer chicken or any other type of meat, there are cookbooks which are more concentrated on one type of ingredient. Of course, for people who'll eat anything, this is no problem.

What you should look at then, is the inside of the cookbook. Are the recipes easy enough to follow? Are the ingredients within your budget? Do the pictures of the finished food look appetizing and are they something you will like doing? These are questions you need answered beforehand, because some people regret having bought a cookbook after realizing the foods aren't really meant to be cooked by them. You might also prefer buying a spring bound book, since you have to read while cooking. Hardbound books, as you might know, easily closes. It would be hard to hold the book and exerting effort when unnecessary.

After finally thinking these through, you might see that several cookbooks are within those categories. Since you can only buy one, it's time to compare prices. Which one is worth the money you'll spend? You might like to try counting the number of recipes in the book before comparing.

Choosing a cookbook isn't really hard; you just have to know a few tips here and now. If you have no time for any of these, just ask your friends which they would recommend. Of course, your friend must have the same level of skill as you have, so it wouldn't be too easy or too hard on your part. So what are waiting for, buy the most suitable cookbook for you now.

Diet Books Versus Cookbooks

(I made an interesting observation today, and I cannot wait to hear your feedback. I think I'm onto something.)

I love bookstores. In fact, when I die, I would love to have the "sitting up," a Southern thang, in the window of a small boutique bookstore. It would definitely draw in some business. However, my mortality is not the point of this post. I want to discuss energy.

Bookstores are full of all types of energy, ranging from depression to over the top excitement. As a coach, I'm really good at reading the energy of others, and today, I was like a kid in a candy shop, tapping into the diverse moods and spirits that pervaded the place.

I walked from section to section - fiction, World History, poetry, children's, New Age - but when I rounded the corner to walk through the dieting aisle, I felt a sudden drop in energy. I didn't just feel it on a superficial level, but it was a feeling that started in my gut and rose into my throat.

I watched a few women pick up different books that presented opposing theories. One woman held a copy of Skinny Bitch in one hand and The Atkins Diet in another. Her face screamed desperation and confusion. Another lady was holding a book on eating disorders. (It is not a coincidence that the dieting books are adjacent to the recovery/addiction section.)

I began to think back to my days of dieting, and the toxic cycle that I was caught in. With each failing diet, I became more desperate to find the next promised miracle. On a 0-10 energy scale, dieting was about a -99.

I quickly walked through the aisle and rounded another corner to the shelves that were adorned with beautiful cookbooks from all over the world. What I experienced was fascinating. So fascinating, that I could not wait to get home and write about it. When I started walking down the cookbook section, my spirit lifted. I became lighter amidst the covers of beautiful, artisan breads and bountiful fruits and vegetables.

I also experienced other shifts in emotions:

-fear to peace
-heavy to light
-lack to abundance
-sadness to joy
-self-consciousness to confidence
-negative self talk to self-love
-frustration to calm
-confusion to trust

I also noticed the difference between the women perusing the cookbooks compared to ladies who were trying to decide whether to go raw or eat right for their blood type. The "cookbook" women seemed relaxed with a bit of excitement. I listened to a couple of them discuss their favorite recipes from Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

I picked up one of my favorite cookbooks, Country Cooking in France, and felt the excitement in my stomach, much different from the nauseating feeling that I had felt earlier when I was caught between the addiction and dieting shelves.

Interestingly, the women in the cookbook section were all thin. Yes, the women who were thumbing through recipes made with real butter, sugar, and flour were all thin, while the women who were looking for their next diet were not.

So, what does my observation mean? I believe that if a person allows herself to enjoy all types of foods that feels good in her own body, she will operate at a much higher energy level, which attracts a naturally slender body. She does not possess the fear of deprivation or lack as those who are living from diet to diet or those who don't diet but live with low energy levels.

Women who are relaxed don't usually binge. Women who allow themselves to enjoy the occasional treat don't feel the need to eat the whole bag of Oreos. Women who love themselves find other ways to feed their hungry heart. Women who possess higher energies, such as happiness, joy, excitement, optimism, and love, attract more of those powers into their lives.

The universe is abundant, and she relaxes into this abundance, not feeling like she must devour whatever comes her way, whether it is food or her self.

She simply listens to her body, feeds it a variety of delicious foods and trusts the natural process of eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full.

If you struggle with your weight, ask yourself the following:

-Do diet books excite me? -Do I gain clarity or collect more confusion from diet books? -Would I rather cook (and eat) from a beautifully crafted cookbook with fresh, delicious ingredients or adhere to a strict plan that requires rigid rules and keeping up with a bunch of numbers?

If your answers were not positive, then your body is most likely telling you that dieting is not your answer. In fact, science has proven that dieting leads to more disordered eating and, in most cases, weight gain. Dieting is very low energy, which conflicts with the energy required to lose weight.

Here is a hint: weight loss comes when you learn to connect with your body and make peace with it. That means providing it with delicious foods, dropping the rules of others, and loving yourself as your ideal body emerges.

After making my bookstore observation, I grabbed a new cookbook to add to my collection and went out of my way to avoid the draining dieting aisle that continues to suck the energy (and life) out of women.

Best Cookbooks For Beginners - If You Are Just Learning How To Cook, Then This Cookbook Is For You

The best cookbooks for beginners should not only have great recipes, but they must also provide a basic education on food and cooking. That first cookbook for a new home chef can be the difference between enjoying great homemade family meals versus giving up and resorting back to take-out and fast-food.

This article discusses important elements a cookbook should have for new cooks. We also recommend the one cookbook to get first, and how you can find some sample recipes to try out right away.

What Beginners Need In A Cookbook

Recipes - I know, pretty obvious that a cookbook should have recipes. But there are so many recipes in cookbooks and on the Internet that simply do NOT work! It is especially important for beginners to have real working recipes that are simple, easy to follow and works to produce a great tasting meal consistently.Basic Cooking Education - A beginner's cookbook must provide some basic cooking education. You cannot just pick-up a recipe with list of ingredients and steps, and then execute it. For example, a baking recipe that calls for 1 cup of flour may need to be lightly "spooned in" to the measuring cup and leveled off with a butter knife. A beginner might just scoop up a packed/dense heaping cup of flour that would be way too much. A simple step like measuring out a cup of flour is not that obvious to a beginner. Imagine what else they may do without some basic cooking education.Kitchen Equipment Guide - It is also likely that a new cook will not have all the equipment they need in their kitchen. With all the kitchen gadgets and infomercials on the market, they may waste money and clutter up their kitchen with junk they do not need. Beginners need a cookbook that discusses kitchen equipment, how to use one and even better, make solid recommendations on functionality, quality and price. Another great example is checking your oven. In my favorite cookbook, one of the first things it talks about is checking your oven temperature. Oven temperature readings are often inaccurate. You may follow and execute a recipe perfectly, but if your oven temperature is wrong, that dish is not going to come out right. A great cookbook will help a beginner (and even experienced cooks) to avoid these kind of cooking issues.

The ONE Cookbook To Get First

The America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook, by America's Test Kitchen covers all of these requirements perfectly, and more. It is a top-seller of the best cookbooks for beginners today. Many people would argue that it is even the "primary" cookbook kitchens go to for all their cooking instruction.

Alicia Silverstone's Kind Diet - A Lot Less Agenda Pushing Than Other Vegan Cookbooks

Vegan cookbooks are more abundant than they ever have been, but the amounts pale in comparison to the more popular western diet cookbooks that still exist and are produced. The beauty in The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet is that it doesn't really push an agenda upon the reader while providing even the newest vegan with a plethora of easy to use, easy to love vegan recipes to experiment with. The book takes into consideration those considering going vegetarian for the first time, those who want to implement a vegan meal plan into their diets consistently, and those who are ready to become 'Superheros' (as she calls them) and make vegetables and grains the centerpieces of that diet.

The book is a quick read as half of it consists of Alicia's vegan recipes, and the content before that is soft, simple to understand but important enough to make an impact. For those who are thinking about eliminating meat and dairy from their diets, there is plenty of powerful reference material explaining how meat and dairy negatively impact our diets and the environment. It isn't done on a soapbox, and I commend Alicia Silverstone for using a very conversational approach to the material. For the power vegan, she provides some excellent recipes that are very hearty, healthy, and delicious all at once. Mind you, there are ingredients in some of these recipes that a neophyte may have never heard of before--but the nice thing about this cookbook is that is the exception and not the rule. If you feel like being creative and doing some foodie research though, you will have some good material to study.

Some vegan cookbooks fall short on pictures; this vegan cookbook provides plenty of meal photos. Visual learners and eaters rejoice!

The meat and dairy industry information is well researched and factual in The Kind Diet Vegan Cookbook

If you were to remove the celebrity author status from this book I would still own it. I didn't learn a bunch of new information as I am not in the 'flirting' stages of Veganism, but the recipes were fantastic. Of all of the vegan cookbooks out this vegan cookbook does have some unique but very hearty recipes that I will continue to use and tweak. I am glad they dedicated much of the second portion of the book to the recipes they chose...I got some new fresh ideas and that alone made it valuable.

Check Out These Cookbooks From Weber Grills

People who have Weber barbecue grills know this - that every time we purchase any model of Weber grills, there is a free cookbook that goes with it. But aside from the cookbooks that come with every grill purchased, there are also other cookbooks from Weber Grills which may be bought in bookstores. Let's take a look at a couple of Weber grilling books that we, barbecue lovers, would love to own.

The "Weber's Real Grilling: Over 200 Original Recipes," by Jamie Purviance is one of the Weber grilling books that is highly recommended. From the title itself, we would know that this book contains several recipes for grilling. However, what makes this book different from the other Weber grilling books available is that the procedures are lengthily explained, allowing readers to understand the recipes better. This, of course, will allow readers to prepare food in a more accurate manner. Despite the fact that Weber Grills is one of the publishers of this book, it does not mention specific brands as a form of endorsement. It is also a credible book because Purviance is a well-known writer who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America. Among the recipes included in this Weber grilling book are those for vegetables, fish, poultry, pork, and red meat. The other publisher of this book is Oxmoor House. With 304 pages, this costs US$24.95 but there are bookstores that offer it at a discount.

The "Weber's Art of the Grill: Recipes for Outdoor Living," by Jamie Purviance, Tim Turner, and Mike Kempster is also a well-recommended book for grilling. Its original price is US$40.00 but we may find discounted copies for as low as US$26.40, which is not bad for a hard-bound book. It of course includes recipes for vegetables, seafood, chicken, and meats but what makes it different from the other cookbooks is that it also teaches us various ways of cooking. For example, it teaches us how to cook directly and indirectly, and it suggests which sauces should be applied to the foods that would be grilled. Among the sauces mentioned in this Weber grilling book are hot pepper vinegar sauce, Dijon wine sauce, and honey-gingered peach sauce. Reading this book is a lot of fun as it suggests recipes for grilled desserts as well. The co-publisher of Weber Grills for this book is Chronicle Books. Released in bookstores on March 1, 1999, this Weber grilling book features 208 pages with dimensions of 10.1 inches x 9.1 inches x 1 inch. This book should not be compared with "Weber's Real Grilling: Over 200 Original Recipes" because authors made sure that the former has its own style. While we will enjoy reading "Weber's Real Grilling: Over 200 Original Recipes," we will also have fun reading "Weber's Art of the Grill: Recipes for Outdoor Living" because the recipes are very easy to follow.

Why not grab a copy of any of these Weber grilling books? Getting ideas from these books will certainly make grilling more exciting and enjoyable.

Vegetarian Cookbooks - 7 Things All Great Vegetarian Cookbooks Must Have

In order for vegetarian cookbooks to be great I believe they need to have seven very important ingredients...

1. Large colorful photos of the finished recipes - I don't know about you but one of my favorite past times is laying around on the sofa or a deck chair and flicking through vegetarian cookbooks and magazines looking at photos and getting inspired to cook one that looks great.

2. Measurements in cups and spoons as opposed to weights - nothing frustrates me more than going to cook a recipe and having to weigh 10g of this and 100g of that. I find it so much easier when recipes say 1 cup of flour or 1/2 cup of Tahini or a handful of broccoli.

3. Small ingredients lists - I love cooking and I do enjoy cooking elaborate recipes but most of the time I want recipes that can be cooked with the least amount of time and fuss. I love vegetarian cookbooks that have recipes with ingredient lists of no more than 10 ingredients, preferably with just 6, and quick and easy steps in the cookery method.

4. Breakfast, lunch/dinner and sweets - I'm not into entree, starters, mains and desert type vegetarian cookbooks. I'm about being practical, we eat breakfast lunch and dinner every day and most of us have a sweet tooth so I like vegetarian cookbooks that have a table of contents categorized into breakfast, lunch/dinner (most vegetarian meals can be either lunch or dinner) and sweets.

5. I also like reading short notes about where the author found the inspiration for the dish. I think it personalizes the cookbook and makes a very interesting read.

6. A good index - Recipes need to be listed by more than just the name of the dish. French Fries need to be listed under "F" for French Fries as well as "P" for potatoes. By listing recipes under their name and the main vegetable makes it easy to search for something to make with the fresh seasonal produce you just picked from the garden or purchased from the local farmers market. It also helps at the end of the week when you are wondering how to use up the left over vegetables in the fridge.

7. I also like vegetarian cookbooks that are categorized into seasons. After all, that is the way nature intended us to eat. Fresh seasonal produce is the healthiest and most environmental way to eat.

Adam has been a vegetarian for 19 years, is a qualified chef and specializes in helping people live a healthier, more compassionate and more sustainable life via vegetarian cooking classes, vegetarian cookbooks and keynote speeches.
